What is a gifted child?
 
Gifted children were born like that generally. As they grow up, they often exhibit specific characteristics which, while they are not sufficient to diagnose giftedness, usually justify testing of the IQ (Intellectual Quotient) by a qualified psychologist. The average IQ is 100 and gifted children have an IQ of 130 or more.
 
Here are a few common characteristics, observed by specialists in giftedness and by parents (these are only examples):
  • Early learning (not systematic): they speak very well very early (around the age of 2), there is no baby talk. They learn how to read alone (without any assistance from an adult) before school age. They quickly master complicated grammar and syntax: "I wish I were in Scotland". Some are very advanced in motor skills (walk alone at 9 months), others are quite clumsy.
  • Precise vocabulary:  they won't say "it's a dog" but "it's a golden Labrador". They take many things literally.
  • "Creative" spelling: they usually write very badly and very slowly.
  • Extreme lucidity: they ask metaphysical questions very early: "where does life come from?", "when did the Earth begin?", "where is the end of space?".
  • Urge to understand everything: the notion of death being inevitable is obvious to them at the age of 3 or 4 (most other children do not understand this before they are 8 or 9).
  • Immense need for intellectual stimulation: they are passionate about dinosaurs, space, abstract notions like the infinite.
  • Great sense of humor, except about themselves!
  • Hypersensitivity: to noises (white noise), smells, words, emotions, etc. High sense of justice.
  • Emotional needs: to the power 10...
 
IMPORTANT

Gifted children do not make an easy-to-identify population; there are indeed many varied profiles (language, memory, adaptation, motivation, personality, etc.).

They have however several things in common, mainly extraordinary intellectual abilities and a large discrepancy between these abilities and their performances, mainly at school. This justifies our project, which aims to help these children get their self confidence back and avoid failure at school.
